The Oklahoma Sooners are now 4-1. No, it has not been pretty at all. In fact, all but one game has been pretty ugly, and even in that game, their win over the Temple Owls, you could say some of the offensive woes were already showing through despite a 50-plus point showing on that side of the ball.
This game, though, this one was the definition of "Sooner Magic." As Brent Venables said after the game, this was his first experience with "Sooner Magic."
The offense was bad for most of the game as we all expected. The defense was bad for a large portion of the game, like we didn't expect. Yet, both showed up in the fourth quarter when it mattered most. The run game was actually decent all game long, and the pass game was almost non-existent.
And even that showed up in the fourth quarter with a beautiful play on the deep pass from Michael Hawkins Jr. to J.J. Hester, who was the best wide receiver for Oklahoma on Saturday. The defense especially showed up, too, with a pick-six by Kip Lewis, which was the fourth-longest pick-six by a linebacker in OU history.
The Sooners won their first SEC game on Saturday, with a true freshman at quarterback, with their top-five wide receivers all out, their third-string running back out who's looked great, and injuries on the offensive line. And, they did it on the road, in one of the toughest places to play in the country.
So, yeah, forgive them if they had to use Sooner Magic to get their first-ever SEC win because the cards were stacked against them. And, yes, it wasn't ugly, but that game right there, the fact that they won that, shows that it can get much better from here with a healthy team.
