The Buffalo Bills can bring in free agents to deal with the blows they've received at cornerback but that doesn't guarantee they'll actually get to play.
As the team places a recently signed player on the practice squad injured list, they're reminded that nothing is guaranteed in the NFL.
Earlier in the week, the Bills signed Xavier Rhodes – a 2017 First-Team All-Pro – to provide some depth in the secondary as the team navigates multiple cornerback injuries including those to Dane Jackson and Christian Benford.
Rhodes was expected to be a game-day contributor for the Bills, either by being a practice squad elevation or by getting signed to the 53-man roster. Now, he'll be forced to miss the next four games.
Just like Injured Reserve, that's the rule for the practice squad list Rhodes is being placed in. It's fair to assume that puts his prospects of actually playing with the Bills in question.
After all, Jackson is expected by many to be active on Sunday. Add to that Christian Benford and Tre'Davious White over the next few weeks and the Bills could have a healthy cornerback room by the time Rhodes is able to come back.
Bills' head coach Sean McDermott said earlier in the week that Rhodes had suffered a hamstring injury and wouldn't be making his debut versus the Baltimore Ravens. Now he's ineligible to debut with Buffalo until Week 8 when the Green Bay Packers come to town.
