The Buffalo Bills' general manager divided fans with his selection of LB Dorian Williams from Tulane during the 2023 NFL Draft. Williams led the team in tackles and finished his season with 125 tackles, 5 sacks, and 6.5 tackles for loss.
Tremaine Edmunds departure left a huge hole on the roster that fans were hoping would be addressed during the draft. Williams appeared, at first glance, to not be that replacement.
In fact, after Williams was selected, Beane opened up to the media to discuss what his role would be. The Bills general manager said that to start camp Williams would be starting outside not inside.
Using important draft capital on a suspected special teams player or not on a position of need caused a massive divide on social media. Fans were left scratching their heads, especially after Beane came out and said that Williams wouldn't be competing on the inside.
However, Bills Insider and Co-Host of One Bills Live Chris Brown quoted Dorian Williams from a conversation the new draft pick had with Bills head coach Sean McDermott on what his role looks like within the organization.
Williams revealed that McDermott told him to learn both inside and outside linebacker positions, a stark contrast from what Beane told the media after the selection was made. To put the cherry on top, Williams gave a shoutout to Matt Milano, telling the media how excited he was to get to work with the All-Pro linebacker.
Dorian Williams' private conversation with Sean McDermott could change everything about the upcoming season. Williams' getting to learn and potentially excel inside would fill a huge need for the current roster. Getting one of their most important defensive positions sorted out would be a game-changer for the team's outlook next season.
The front office is going to have their work cut out for them when the season begins. Perhaps they are higher up on Tyrel Dodson, or maybe WIlliams will make the move over to inside. Nevertheless, all eyes will be on Buffalo for one of their most important positions. If Williams were able to pan out on the inside next season, the sky is the limit for the organization.
