It’s impossible to pin the blame on just one player for the Buffalo Bills’ 20-17 loss to the New York Jets.
Many will point to the Bills’ final play of the game. Quarterback Josh Allen took a deep shot on 4th and 21 to his intended target, Gabe Davis. The ball was perfectly placed, but Davis couldn’t make the play.
After the game, Davis owned up to the drop.
“Didn’t put my hands where they were supposed to be,” Davis admitted. “Josh threw a great ball. It’s all on me.”
Davis’ big-play ability often covers up his issue with drops. His 54% career catch percentage speaks for itself, and while that specific play can be pinned on Davis, Buffalo should have never found itself in that position to begin with.
It wasn’t Davis who allowed one of the most futile rushing attacks in football rush for 174 yards. Davis wasn’t the reason for Allen’s two interceptions. The Bills lost this one as a team.
It happens in a league with as much parity as the NFL has. The Bills, who most consider to be the top dogs in the league, will get everybody’s best shot every week. The odds on Super Bowl favorites have a target on their back.
Davis will undoubtedly make more big plays throughout the second half of the regular season, and everybody remembers what he did in the postseason last year. It’s these explosive plays that can help to atone for his mistakes.
So before everybody jumps on Davis, one drop didn’t decide this game. The Bills shot themselves in the foot all day long, but Davis was just the last player to hold the gun.
