Brandon Beane is a wizard.
The Bills Mafia love to claim that their general manager is some otherworldly entity. Specifically, a wizard. Anytime Beane makes a splash signing or re-signs a player to below market-average, or sometimes just breathes… The fans love it. He doesn't go without his faults though, and there have been several drafts where Beane has missed or let players go that wound up being uber-successful elsewhere.
However, more often than not, Beane and the front office are praised for what they are able to do and who they are able to bring in. This offseason was no different as the team was applauded for an under-the-radar addition to the roster.
This offseason fans were expecting Jordan Poyer to leave the team. There were rumors swirling, Poyer had signed a new agent, he discussed the less-than-ideal tax situation in New York, and the team had lost out on the Tremaine Edmunds sweepstakes. Surprisingly, Beane was able to keep Poyer which made the next offseason addition that much more impressive.
While keeping the elite, All-Pro tandem of Poyer and Micah Hyde, Buffalo was able to add another starting-caliber safety in Taylor Rapp. Rapp spent the past two seasons for the Rams which saw him start in 33 contests. What's more, Rapp started all 17 regular season games during the team's 2021 Super Bowl run and was instrumental in their victory in the big game.
Rapp is not only an answer for the future as Poyer and Hyde's contracts will be up over the next few seasons, but can find meaningful playing time in the immediate future. SI.com broke down how he can be an asset early and often with the Bills' defense, "In addition to providing insurance for the aging Hyde-Poyer duo, Rapp will likely see snaps as a third safety on the field. The Bills use five defensive backs in their base alignment and never directly replaced linebacker Tremaine Edmunds who went to Chicago in free agency."
Whether he's an insurance policy or will make an impact this season, or both, Beane has seemingly struck gold once again. Rapp has a real shot at some substantial playing time and was easily one of their best additions so far this offseason.
Only time will tell if the moves Beane and the front office made this offseason will lead to results. For now, all we can do is speculate. It seems for at least one more day, Beane is still a wizard.
