The Buffalo Bills have their new defensive coordinator.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo report that the Bills are promoting linebackers coach Bobby Babich to defensive coordinator,
Babich had received interest from other teams, with the Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, and New York Giants all requesting to interview him for their defensive coordinator positions. But they can now cross him off the list.
The former linebackers coach joined the Bills in 2017 as an assistant defensive backs coach, but moved to coach safeties in 2018. In 2022, he began his stint as the linebackers coach and there he caught the eyes of many.
Buffalo recently lost defensive line coach Eric Washington after the Chicago Bears signed him for their defensive coordinator vacancy.
Washington was head coach Sean McDermott's second, so when he left, speculation began about whether Babich would fill that roll.
And now it's confirmed.
Tyrel Dodson, Terrel Bernard, and Matt Milano all thrived under Babich, so now he will get the chance to lead the defense and help other players grow in his larger roll.
This it the second major and internal hire for the Bills, who recently promoted Joe Brady to offensive coordinator, erasing the "interim" from his title.
