Bills renegotiate key contract to free up even more salary cap space
What are the Bills planning?
The Buffalo Bills have made another move to increase their salary cap room.
The Bills and Nyheim Hines have finally agreed to a renegotiated contract, a source told ESPN’s Field Yates on Thursday. The full details have not been disclosed yet, but the renegotiation includes a $1 million signing bonus and “the chance to earn more than the $4.79M in cash he was previously due," per Yates.
It’s possible that the Bills reduced Hines’ salary and inserted incentives to allow him to earn it and more back. The $1M signing bonus means the team would take on dead money if he was released or traded.
Buffalo acquired Hines at the trade deadline last year. He carried the ball six times for -1 yard and caught five passes for 53 yards with a touchdown in seven games. He also returned 16 punts for 153 yards and 19 kicks for 554 yards with two touchdowns. It's unclear why he had such a reduced role, but that should increase in 2023.
Bills running backs Devin Singletary and Taiwan Jones are free agents who have yet to be re-signed. Hines and 2022 second-round pick James Cook are the only running backs on Buffalo’s 90-man roster.
Hines was an accomplished pass catcher and ball carrier with the Colts. He has 306 career carries for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns and 240 receptions for 1,778 yards with eight touchdowns.
