Unfortunately for the Buffalo Bills (10-3), their best defensive player, Von Miller, won't be with them on the field in their pursuit of a championship this season. A torn ACL will sideline him for this season, and likely delay the start of his 2023 campaign for an undetermined amount of time.
Appearing in just 11 games this season, Miller lead all other Bills players in every major defensive category for anyone on the defensive line:
Sacks (8), tackles for loss (10), QB hits (12), QB hurries (16) and pressures (27). All considerably one-sided in Miller's favor.
The good news is the Buffalo Bills still control their own destiny in the AFC playoffs. They are number one in the AFC and can clinch homefield throughout.
Even more good news is that in Miller's absence, another pass rusher is stepping up. In an already break-out like sophomore campaign, DL Greggory Rousseau is already the team's second best edge rusher and now number one option of the front seven.
In 10 games this season, his numbers only fall below Miller, and will likely soon eclipse by the season's end. 7 sacks, 8 tackles for loss, 12 QB hits, 2 QB hurries and 14 pressures.
What's more impressive is the way in which he is being used. Rotating between a 5-technique defensive end, a standing edge or even as a traditional defensive end when the Bills play with four down linemen.
His versatility, combined with his improved power and technique using his length is apparent. The Buffalo Bills need someone to be their go-to guy on defense to create pressure and bring down the quarterback in the playoffs.
It might sound like a lot to ask of someone who is only 22, but based on what we continue to see from him this season, he's up for it. Rousseau won't have the advantage of playing across Miller into the playoffs, but is excelling regardless.
