Cincinnati Bengals punter Drue Chrisman was not at the team's first training camp practice Wednesday afternoon as he was hospitalized with an undisclosed condition earlier in the day.
Head coach Zac Taylor told reporters after practice Chrisman was still in the hospital when practice began and had no further updates.
Taylor's full response indicates that while it might not be a serious or long-lasting issue, it was thankfully treated quickly. The Bengals are far too familiar with acting hastily with surprise ailments when Joe Burrow had an emergency appendectomy this time last year.
A Cincinnati native and Ohio State alum, Chrisman was set to compete with rookie Brad Robbins for the Bengals' punting job. He took over for long-time veteran Kevin Huber in the middle of last season. He averaged 47.4 yards per punt, but his average hang time was a meager 3.85. Only two others had an average under 4.00.
Missing any practice time at all will put Chrisman even further behind the eight ball than he already was. What's most important is he comes out of the hospital completely healthy.
