Andrew Berry made a strong comment about Myles Garrett — but it’s easy to see through what the Browns want the picture to look like

Andrew Berry and the Cleveland Browns have taken a clear stance on the Myles Garrett trade rumors. Unfortunately for them, it doesn’t mean much until they prove it.

The Cleveland Browns created some noise around the NFL with one simple change to star EDGE Myles Garrett’s contract last week.

Last week the Browns and Garrett agreed to change the contract language regarding how his option bonuses are paid out over the next three seasons. The $29 million was set to trigger on March 25, but the date has now been pushed back to the beginning of September.

This keeps the door open for the Browns to potentially trade Garrett because they never would have traded him once the $29 million is paid. There was no real cap benefit of making the move aside from keeping the trade window open.

Andrew Berry sends a clear message about Myles Garrett, but it doesn’t mean much at the end of the day

“Myles is a career Brown,” Berry said on Sunday at league meetings. “He is one of the faces of our organization. I think we’ve been very clear both past and present in terms of our goals. I understand all the questions. I’ll be honest, I don’t really want to waste a ton more breath on the topic.”

Berry can say all of the above now and the Browns may very well feel that way. But there is also a business side to this, and the Browns clearly made a move on Garrett’s contract for a reason. They can’t come out and say they did it to trade Garrett because leverage is a thing here, but it’s clear they’re at least keeping the door open.

Garrett is 30 years old and in the prime of his career coming off a record-breaking 23 sack season. The former No. 1 overall pick has two Defensive Player of the Year awards to his name and would net the Browns a sizable haul in any trade. It’s a move the Browns should make if they believe it will speed up their rebuild.

Cleveland is sure getting at least two first-round picks plus more for any trade of their star pass rusher. For now, it’s one the team says they’re not making. We’ll see if they stand on it.
