Kareem Hunt is rumored to be signing with the New Orleans Saints following a successful visit, as long as he passes his physical.
This is good timing for Hunt, who could finally get on an NFL roster again, just in time for the preseason. After a mediocre 2022 season with the Browns, the University of Toledo product gets the chance to show it was a fluke.
In 2022, Hunt saw his yard per carry drop to a career-low mark of 3.8. It was a significant fall-off from the previous season when he ran the ball at 4.9 per pop. Multiple sources told me there was zero chance that the Browns brought back Hunt, as they believed he lost his explosiveness.
Hunt had his best season with Cleveland in 2020 when he made five starts for an injured Nick Chubb. That season, Chubb had 841 rushing yards, which is the second most in his career outside of his rookie season with the Kansas City Chiefs when he led the league with 1,327 of them.
After arriving in Cleveland and playing for the Browns for four seasons, Hunt was universally liked. He had a bad departure from the Chiefs after he was rightfully cut when a video surfaced of him assaulting a woman. Hunt never came across no other real trouble with the Browns.
Now, Hunt could get a chance to be the backup for the Saints for the first three games that Alvin Kamara is suspended. Following those three weeks, he will likely be the No. 3 guy behind Kamara and Jamaal Williams.
Nonetheless, the opportunity is there for Hunt to show he deserves touches in the Saints’ offense and that he’s better than the stats showed in 2022.
