Detroit Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson had a big season in 2023. He finished the year out with 11.5 sacks in the regular season and then added three more in the playoffs. He was also second in the league in pressures. All this was enough for NFL execs to ranked him as the sixth best edge rusher in the NFL in ESPN's latest poll.

Sixth is a good spot for him. He's still a young player and there are still a handful of guys that are better than him. Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby, Nick Bosa, T.J. Watt and Micah Parsons all come to mind. Speaking of one of those players, an NFL scouting director was quoted in the article as saying that Hutchinson is the next one of them.

"High ceiling. He will be the next Nick Bosa," an NFL scouting director said. "Banking on him getting even better. Highly disruptive, physical, near rare motor."

The comparison is a good one. They have a very similar style of play that bears a lot of the same fruit. Last year Bosa led the league in pressures with 122. Hutchinson was right behind him with 121. Bosa got 16 sacks and Hutchinson had 11.5, but Bosa had a much stronger defensive line with him.

The big problem for Hutchinson last year was the constant double and triple teams that he took on. Now Hutchinson is going to be able to take advantage of the addition of DJ Reader and the Lions strengthening of their secondary. Perhaps some of those pressures turn into sacks and he's able to have a more Bosa like year with big production.

Last year an NFC Scout said that Hutchinson could have a breakout with 15 to 20 sacks. This year that seems like it could actually happen.

There's been some belief that Hutchinson could be in the conversation to win the league's Defensive Player of the Year award in 2024. The same award Bosa just won in 2022. We'll find out this season if the comparison holds true and if Hutchinson could be the first Lions' player to win that award.
