The Lions did exactly what you wanted them to do and it didn't work out

Ok, let's talk about it. The Detroit Lions went to the NFC Championship game and had a real shot to win the game. The Lions made some mistakes. They fumbled the ball, they allowed one of the most insane bad break catches ever and ultimately lost the game. I know what everyone is going to want to focus on though, the two failed fourth down conversions.

The Lions were up 24-7 and had a chance to make it 27-7 if they would have gone for the field goal. But instead the Lions did the thing they always do. They did the thing that Lions fans love about this team. They didn't just settle for putting points on the board. They opted to step on the 49ers necks and they were a Josh Reynolds catch away from more than likely doing that.

It didn't work out this time. That's what happened. The Lions didn't make a big mistake when they did that. They did the thing that plenty of Lions fans were asking them to do coming out of the half. There were a ton of tweets about not letting up and going out there and stepping on their necks. That's what they tried to do. It doesn't work every time.

Even worse than that, how could you possibly predict that the 49ers would do all the things they wound up doing. The Lions offense wasn't the only unit that was in full control at that exact moment. The Lions defense had been playing pretty well. In that moment you have to have faith that will continue. It didn't.

On the second one I can sort of vibe with you. The Lions could send Michael Badgley out to kick a long field goal. He hit from 54 yards out against the Rams just a could weeks ago. But this is playoff football and at the end of the day, are you going to trust the guy that's demonstrated that he misses the long kick more than he makes it or are you going to trust the offense that's been balling out for most of the day. The offense feels a lot safer. You convert there and now we're talking about maybe taking a lead or at least having a closer field goal for Badgley.

I get you're upset and you have to find something to blame. What really needs to the blame is that the Lions lost the momentum and they lost to a very good team that's likely going to win it all this year. The two fourth down fails didn't meant the Lions then had to fail to stop the 49ers defense for the rest of the game. Those fourth down fails also didn't need mean the offense suddenly had to go cold.

The Lions should continue to live their identity next season. They should continue to be the team that's aggressive and goes for it in these big moments. After all, that's the reason the Lions were in this moment to begin with.
