What the Detroit Lions have to do to get Michigan Panthers kicker Jake Bates on their roster
It wasn't just a fad for Michigan Panthers kicker Jake Bates. He wasn't just a story that was hot for a minute and then everyone forgot about him. He's the real deal and he's still making big kicks. This past weekend Bates nailed a 60-yarder and then kicked a 42-yard game winner later in the […]
It wasn't just a fad for Michigan Panthers kicker Jake Bates. He wasn't just a story that was hot for a minute and then everyone forgot about him. He's the real deal and he's still making big kicks. This past weekend Bates nailed a 60-yarder and then kicked a 42-yard game winner later in the day. Detroit Lions fans went crazy for him again.
There is no doubt that the Lions are going to want this kid. They've reportedly already reached out. As have a lot of other teams. There's been a lot of questions from Lions fans as to what needs to happen to get this done. Here's what we know:
Wait
That's the first thing that needs to be done. There might be some belief that the Lions can just go ahead and sign Bates today like the Tigers, Red Wings or Pistons could just bring someone up from their minor league team. That's not the case.
The Lions have to wait until UFL season concludes. That's not until June 17th. The day after the league's championship game. UFL players will then be able to sign NFL contracts.
Get There First
Like we said, plenty of other teams are interested in Bates and they will more than likely descend upon him the moment they can. This is where the Lions have the biggest advantage since Bates is already right here in Detroit and is playing this magical season in the Lions building. Detroit shouldn't have a problem getting there first.
Pay The Most
This is not like the usual UFL to the NFL situation. Players have moved up from those leagues on multiple occasions, but this is the first time that a player is so evidently ready for the NFL and will more than likely jump right into a starting role. He is going to have his pick of the litter and that means he's going to have the opportunity to go to whoever offers the most money.
The Lions need to be that team if they want him bad enough. They're not going to get thus done with a minimum like they would with other UFL players. This might need to be a multi year deal with some guaranteed money and everything.
Still Want Him
There's nothing to say that the Lions aren't still interested. But, it's fair to take into account that a lot has gone down since the report that they reached out in March. The Lions went through a draft and then they did bring in another kicker. Is it fair to just write rookie James Turner off immediately? He was pretty good for Michigan last year.
I think the Lions still take a shot, I'm just saying don't be shocked if they don't.
The problem with Lions’ edge rusher James Houston
In 2013 the Detroit Lions had this rookie sensation come out of nowhere. I'm talking about tight end Joseph Fauria. He went from being this undrafted rookie that nobody really knew to this guy that suddenly made the 53-man roster and then would up scoring seven touchdowns that season. The expectations off of that became […]
