The Houston Texans received some unfortunate news on Monday.
Per reports, star right tackle Tytus Howard broke his hand at camp. The lineman reportedly already had surgery and is expected to miss "a while," per head coach DeMeco Ryans.
With a rookie quarterback at the helm, injuries to the offensive line are the last thing you want to see.
Later on, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Howard is expected to be miss four-to-six weeks. This means Howard could potentially be ready to play in the Week 1 opener against the Ravens.
Losing Howard for any length of time would be a huge loss for the Texans. The tackle started all 17 games for the Texans last season and only allowed three sacks. This consistency led to Howard getting the highest PFF rating of his career, finishing with a 67.9.
The quality season came at the perfect time for Howard, who was set to enter a contract year in 2023. Instead, the team inked the tackle to a three-year, $56M deal that includes $36.5M guaranteed. The deal means the Texans have both of their starting tackles locked up through 2027.
Fortunately, it doesn't appear that Howard will miss more than a game or two. In his place, the Texans could turn to Charlie Heck or recent addition George Fant.
