Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's comments in the post-game presser after losing to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs were a bold choice. For the second time this season, the Chiefs were able to knock off the Dolphins. This time in a 26-7 convincing victory in the frigid Kansas City weather.
Tua Tagovailoa was asked about feeling pressure regarding his contract situation heading into the 5th and final year of his contract, which spells decision time for the front office.
"I don't feel any pressure at all. I have full trust in myself and full trust in what I can do for the organization," the Dolphins quarterback told reporters.
This type of response can be perceived as arrogant and dismissive to some fans after such a poorly played game. Against Kansas City, Tagovailoa went 20-39 for 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He averaged a measly, 4.6 yards per pass attempt.
This was not the performance the Dolphins needed from their "star QB" and offense.
Offensive struggles
The Dolphins offense was anemic of any stability in this playoff game. The numbers are tough to see. They were 1-12 on third downs, rushed for only 76 yards, and lost the Time of Possession battle 25:55 to 34:05.
This was Tagovailoa's first career playoff game and with ridiculous elements to add. And yet, the weather cannot be viewed or used as an excuse for the Dolphins signal caller.
Contract Extension…really?
Heading into arguably the most important off-season of head coach Mike McDaniels and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's marriage, fans and myself will ask honest questions regarding the long-term future of the quarterback position.
Is Tua Tagovailoa truly the guy? Can he lead this team and franchise to the illustrious Super Bowl? Lastly, should he receive a hefty market-valued contract extension?
These are valid questions that are and will be unanswered for the duration of the offseason.
Tagovailoa's boldness and overconfidence is admirable but it is not a sure thing that he will receive a contract extension. He has not done enough and his comments missed the mark after a seven-point performance in the postseason.
