Raheem Mostert has found a home as the lead back on the Miami Dolphins' thriving offense. If not for his wife, it might not have happened.
Mostert spoke with the media on Friday and explained that a sit down with his wife after being cut by the Cleveland Browns earlier in his career helped him stay with football.
"That's actually the pivotal moment in my career when I asked my wife on our couch, what should I do, because I just got cut by, you know, several different teams prior to and she asked me 'How much do (you) truly love football'", Mostert said. "And I told her, I mean, I played this sport since I was seven. And she was like, 'Well, I don't see what's stopping you now.' And that was the pivotal moment for me."
Mostert was an undrafted free agent signee with the Eagles in 2015, and his career path from Philadelphia looks like an airline route map. He spent about a month with the Dolphins before going to Baltimore, Cleveland, Chicago, and San Francisco in the course of a little over a year.
He made a name for himself in the Bay Area, running for 772 yards on 137 carries with 8 touchdowns as the 49ers made it to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1994-95 season. However, injuries hampered him the following two seasons, including a knee injury in the 2021 opener that required season-ending surgery.
Now, two years removed from his knee injury, Mostert is looking as fast and explosive as ever. With injuries to multiple members of the running back group, Mostert's snap percentage in the first two games has been 73% and looks to continue to be sizeable for the coming weeks. As such, Mostert perhaps has the chance to have a career season, including eclipsing the 1000-yard mark for the first time ever, at the ripe age of 31.
And it all might not have happened if not for some sage-like advice from his significant other.
