The Minnesota Vikings’ search for its next defensive coordinator has cooled off as of late. On Wednesday, a new report revealed the reasoning behind Minnesota’s patient approach to find the next leader of the defense.

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert reports that the Vikings are waiting to land a potential interview with the Denver Broncos’ DC Ejiro Evero. Evero is currently up for head coaching jobs in Indianapolis and Arizona, which means Minnesota will likely have to wait for those vacancies to be filled before proceeding in their own search.

Evero and Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell have some familiarity, which makes him all the more attractive as a candidate. The pair spent two seasons on the Los Angeles Rams coaching staff (2020-2021), working under Sean McVay.

So far, the Vikings have conducted four interviews for the defensive coordinator position after firing Ed Donatello. Saints co-defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen was one candidate for the gig, but he’s accepted the defensive coordinator job with the Atlanta Falcons.

That leaves Seahawks defensive assistant and associate head coach Sean Desai, Vikings assistant head coach Mike Pettine, and Steelers linebackers coach Brian Flores as the candidates to have been interviewed.

Flores, who served as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2019-2021, is also interviewing for the Cardinals’ head coaching job.

Minnesota has multiple options that many would consider to be home run hires. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is not rushing to a decision to appease the fanbase. Instead, he’s doing his due diligence, making sure the Vikings get this next hire right.
