Things are already super different in New England. And it's only Jerod Mayo's first week on the job.
The Patriots head coach held his introductory press conference on Wednesday, addressing the public for the first time since the announcement was made. Afterwards, he did interviews with local tv stations.
And during one of those interviews, he gave a lot away about a very important decision he will have to make very soon. That's something Bill Belichick never did.
“We’re gonna draft the best player for a position that’s very important," Mayo told WBZ's Steve Burton. "You put the pieces together.”
While there are many positions across the roster that need help, there was one that truly showed this season. So with that, it seems easy to infer that he is talking about drafting a quarterback.
Expect to maybe see Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels in a Patriots jersey next year.
The quarterback situation has been a real problem for the team this past season. Mac Jones was named the starter at the beginning of the season, with both Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham waived and re-signed to the practice squad. While Zappe was quickly moved back to the active roster, Jones continued to get opportunities despite his struggles.
It took numerous benchings before he was officially replaced by Bailey Zappe. And while the offense showed some improvement, the results remained the same.
Both Jones and Zappe lead the Patriots to two wins during their time as starters. So it seems that it might be time for a change.
There are numerous top quarterback prospects in the draft this year, but with the No. 3 overall pick, they have the opportunity to get a future star for the franchise.
