EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The start of the 2023 season has been a rollercoaster for the New York Jets. And things aren't getting any easier.
After Aaron Rodgers got injured and was ruled out for the season, it came down to Zach Wilson. And despite helping lead the team to victory in their season opener, the Jets have not been able to keep that momentum going.
This led to questions of whether Wilson was going to remain the starter or if the Jets were going to look elsewhere and possibly bring in a veteran quarterback.
And after the loss, Jets head coach Robert Saleh addressed this question once again.
"Yeah, he’s fine," Saleh said when asked if Wilson has shown enough to remain the starter. "We’re still early in the season. We knew that even with Aaron (Rodgers) at quarterback, we knew that there was going to be some hiccups along the way because of the new offense, new play caller, new o-line, just new players all over the offensive side of the ball. And now you’ve got this curveball that was sent to us, so they’re acclimating and they’re going to get better. But it’s still very early in the season.
Following Rodgers' injury, the Jets brought up Tim Boyle from the practice squad to serve as the backup to Wilson.
Yet, despite the team's struggles Saleh was clear when asked if Boyle was going to get first team reps: "No."
Wilson finished the game going 18-for-36, throwing for 157 yards and was sacked three times. This included once in the end zone, giving New England a safety.
So why is Saleh so confident in Wilson?
Right now, he’s who gives us the best chance to win," Saleh said. "Basically, that would be the cleanest answer I can give you."
The Jets will have their hands full next week when they face off against the reigning Super Bowl champions. Zach Wilson will have to deal with a dominant Kansas City Chiefs defense in a primetime matchup on Sunday night.
