Aaron Rodgers is getting some extra protection. But this one has nothing to do with his potential political career.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the New York Jets are expected to sign Tyron Smith. The former Dallas Cowboys left tackle is an All-Pro and Pro Bowl offensive linemen in the NFL.
So this has got to make Rodgers excited. And the Jets social team clearly is too.
ESPN's Adam Schefter adds that it is a one-year deal for Smith which could be worth up to $20 million.
A to Z Sports' Cowboys reporter Mauricio Rodriguez provided some context on Smith.
"Tyron Smith playing 14 games last year was a massive win for him as the Cowboys adjusted his practice workload and it paid off. The Jets should follow such scheduled to a tee. When he's on the field, Smith remains one of the best linemen in football and he'll enable the Jets OL to quit worrying about Aaron Rodgers' blindside.
- "4th in run block win rate per ESPN
- 3rd best pass blocking efficiency per PFF
- 4th highest rate for being "left on an island" (no OL help) per Arjun Menon
- 4th highest overall grade per PFF among tackles"
Smith was drafted by the Cowboys in 2011 in the first round with the ninth overall pick, and he has spent his entire career in Dallas. That is until now.
Across his 13 years, he has played in a total of 161 games.
Schefter added that "Smith is said to be looking forward to the idea of protecting Aaron Rodgers."
He will be in charge of some key protection for the future Hall of Fame quarterback.
However, Rodgers might not even make it to the field this year. He has reportedly been approached by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to serve as his running mate on an independent presidential ticket. So if this is the case, he wouldn't have time for football.
But at least for now, Rodgers and Smith are teammates.
The Jets need to get away from Aaron Rodgers as fast as they can
Look, I get it. I've been a Detroit Lions fan my entire life and I've covered the team for 10 years. I understand what it feels like to want your team to win a championship so badly. I know that this is how Jets fans feel and I know you want to win. But is […]
