The first round of the 2023 NFL Draft could not have gone better for the New England Patriots.
Not only did the Patriots trade down — a Bill Belichick staple from No. 14 overall, they also took a player widely considered a top-10 talent in the draft by selecting Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez, filling a major need. New England's top remaining needs include offensive tackle and wide receiver. Cornerback was their most pressing need, however, which takes some stress off for the rest of the event.
Here's the Patriots' full list of 2023 NFL Draft picks:
New England Patriots 2023 NFL Draft Picks
Round 1, No. 17 overall: CB Christian Gonzalez, Oregon

This is a dream pick for the Patriots, who pretty desperately needed a cornerback with size. Gonzalez, who’s 6-foot-1, 197 pounds, also conveniently runs a 4.38-second 40-yard dash with a 41.5-inch vertical leap and 11-feet, 1-inch broad jump. New England traded down and still landed a player they believed would go in the top 10 picks of the 2023 NFL Draft. The risk was worthwhile, and the Patriots picked up an additional fourth-round pick in the process from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Round 2, No. 46 overall: DL Keion White, Georgia Tech

White is a massive edge defender with impressive athleticism at 6-foot-5, 281 pounds and a 4.79-second 40-yard dash. He can play defensive end on early downs and kick inside to defensive tackle in passing situations. The Patriots clearly felt they needed more help on their defensive line heading into the draft.
Round 3, No. 76 overall: LB Marte Mapu, Sacramento State

A third straight defender, Mapu was announced as a linebacker but mostly played safety and slot cornerback as the 2022 Big Sky defensive player of the year. The Patriots believe Mapu can be a cover linebacker and matchup player with his smooth athleticism.
Round 4, No. 107 overall: C Jake Andrews, Troy

Andrews started at center and right guard at Troy and played under former Patriots offensive line coach Cole Popovich. He’ll back up Patriots starting center David Andrews while potentially providing some positional versatility in a pinch.
Round 4, No. 112 overall: K Chad Ryland, Maryland

The Patriots traded up to grab their kicker of the future. Current kicker Nick Folk is 38 years old. Ryland has the leg strength to kick off.
Round 4, No. 117 overall: G Sidy Sow, Eastern Michigan

Sow is a massive 6-foot-5, 323-pound guard with impressive athleticism. He can be the top backup guard behind starters Cole Strange and Michael Onwenu.
Round 5, No. 144 overall: G Atonio Mafi, UCLA

Mafi is another massive guard at 6-foot-3, 329 pounds. He’s a converted defensive tackle with just one year as a starting offensive lineman.
Round 7, Pick 187: WR Kayshon Boutte, LSU

Boutte is a fun pick if the Patriots were going to wait until the sixth round to draft a wide receiver. A former five-star recruit, Boutte comes with some size, athleticism and potential character concerns, but The Athletic’s Dane Brugler projected him as a fourth-round pick.
Round 6, Pick 192: P Bryce Baringer, Michigan State

Baringer is a big-legged, right-footed punter who can come in and compete with Corliss Waitman for the job this summer.
Round 6, No. 210 overall: WR Demario Douglas, Liberty

Douglas is undersized at 5-foot-8, 179 pounds, but he’s athletic and was productive at Liberty. He also returned two punts for touchdowns in his college career.
Round 7, No. 214 overall: CB Ameer Speed, Michigan State

A 6-foot-3, 209-pound cornerback with 4.33-second-40-yard-dash speed, Speed is probably a better special-teams prospect that potential defender. He transferred from Georgia and was a one-year starter with the Spartans.
Round 7, Pick 245: CB Isaiah Bolden, Jackson State

A Florida State transfer, Bolden has ideal size and speed at 6-foot-2, 201 pounds with a 4.35-second 40-yard dash.
