The New England Patriots wasted no time.

Just a day after announcing that they have mutually parted ways with Bill Belichick, the Patriots already have a new head coach.

Multiple sources report that the Patriots have promoted Jerod Mayo, who was always thought to be the successor to Belichick.

This comes after NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Jerod Mayo is "a strong candidate" to become the next head coach and instead of going through all the interviews, the Patriots "could simply hire him."

And they did just that.

With this decision, the team was able to utilize a unique NFL rule.

The Boston Herald's Doug Kyed explained this further.

"Excerpt from the NFL's anti-tampering policy, per a spokesperson: 'Contract may include an agreement to become the club’s next head coach, provided the agreement is filed with the League office at the time is signed and occurs prior to the season in which the vacancy occurs,' he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Mayo has been asked numerous times about the possibility of being the head coach, and he long held the belive that he was the man for the job.

"I feel like I’m ready. I feel like I can talk to men, women, old, young, White, Black – it doesn’t matter," he said (via ESPN's Mike Reiss). "And hopefully develop those people into upstanding citizens and help them evolve … I feel like my calling is to develop.”

And now it's his time to shine.
