DeVante Parker has a lot of work ahead of him if he looks to earn the maximum amount of money in his contract.
Parker signed a three-year contract extension worth up to $33 million with the New England Patriots on Wednesday night, a source confirmed to A to Z Sports. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport was first to report the deal.
However, only $14 million is guaranteed for the veteran wide receiver.
ESPN's Mike Reiss detailed what is necessary for Parker to do in order to earn $33 million, writing that he has to earn every per-game roster bonus and performance incentives. This would include All-Pro honors.
Reiss further reported that Parker's base salary will be lower than $5.7 million, which is what he would have made prior to the restructured deal. Yet, he could make up to that if he gets all per-game roster bonuses and can go over if he earns performance incentives. Reiss added that the deal is expected to be structured similarly in 2024 and 2025.
Parker was traded to the Patriots last season from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a third-round and fifth-round pick. He finished his first season in New England catching 31 passes for 539 yards with three touchdowns in 13 games.
Across his eight-season career, Parker has 369 catches for 5,255 yards with 27 touchdowns in 106 games.
While this restructured deal could potentially free up space for the Patriots to add Pro Bowl receiver DeAndre Hopkins, Reiss reports that the two are not related.
"Parker's deal doesn't appear to be related to the team's decision-making process on Hopkins," Reiss wrote.
However it does solidify Parker's spot with the 6-foot-3, 219-pound wideout being looked at as a cut candidate if New England adds Hopkins.
Now it seems Kendrick Bourne leads that list, with the Patriots able to free up over $5.4 million if they were to trade or cut the receiver. However, Bourne took to Twitter, congratulating Parker on the new deal, writing "Let’s go bro!!!!! Congrats! Let me get a loan."
Parker now has a lot of incentive to play to his fullest this season, with a lot of money on the line.
