The Zach Wilson experiment needs to end for Jets

This can’t be the answer. This can’t continue. This can’t be the story of the season. Not without trying something else.
Robert Saleh can stand in front of the media all he wants and throw his support behind Zach Wilson and talk about all the ways they Zach improving, but the story is written. The verdict is in. Zach Wilson is not an NFL QB.
It’s time for the Jets to do something, dare I say, ANYTHING, at the QB position to give this team a fighting chance.
There are those Jets fans that will blame the offensive line. While a case can be made for the Dallas Cowboys game, the fact is Zach had plenty of time to throw the ball in a 15-10 loss to the New England Patriots. He simply didn’t. He stood in the pocket like a deer in the headlights with no idea what to do with the football.
In fact, Zach Wilson had an average of 3.19 seconds of time to throw according to PFF. Thats good enough for seventh best in the league before the Monday Night games. For reference C.J. Stroud who threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns in a win over the Jaguars had 2.68 seconds.
There are those Jets fans who will blame the coaches. Fine. Maybe it is Robert Saleh. Or Nathaniel Hackett. Or Mike LeFleur. But at some point, you are what you are and you are going to run out of people to blame.
Zach Wilson looks simply lost. He pats the ball in the pocket waiting to be hit. He misses open receivers and misses double coverage. In the most frustrating moment for Jets with the game on the line and he needed to force something down the field on fourth down, he threw it one yard in the flat to Tyler Conklin and ran off the field.
As I write this article, I spent the day watching Josh Dobbs carve up the same Dallas Cowboys team that embarrassed the Jets a week ago. Josh Dobbs who was third string and cut just five weeks ago.
I watched Andy Dalton throw for 300 yards. I watched Jameis Winston come in and give the Saints a shot at a game winning field goal. I watched Gardner Minshew beat the Baltimore Ravens on the road. I watched rookie C.J. Stroud in his third career start throw for 280 yards and two touchdowns to lead his team past a divisional foe on the road.
Why do I have to keep watching Zach Wilson look lost week in and week out? What is the point of continuing with him?
At what point do the excuses stop for Zach Wilson and the truth sets in? Having to start a backup quarterback isn’t the death sentence we all pretend it to be, as long as that backup is an NFL QB. Or at least something close to it. Zach Wilson is neither. And it’s time to do something about it.
How long until the defense grows so frustrated that they keep losing games giving up 13 points? How long until someone gets injured on the defensive side of the ball simply because they are always on the field? How long until the locker room becomes fractured? The cracks are already starting to show.
Imagine being a wide receiver on this team. Garrett Wilson can make an argument for being the best player on the field at any point and he can’t get a ball thrown his way. Mecole Hardman can’t sniff the field. How long until those cracks become chasms?
Earlier today, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports said that Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan have both reached out to the Jets to express interest in joining the team. The Jets and coach Robert Saleh have remained committed to Zach Wilson. Why?
What more do you need to see from to know that he has come as far as he can in his development with this team?
Do I believe that Matt Ryan, Carson Wentz or any of the other names thrown out are going to make the Jets a Super Bowl contender? No. But I KNOW they aren’t that with Zach Wilson. I know that watching the Jets offense with Zach Wilson at the helm is a cocktail of hilarity, embarrassment, and vomit-inducing boredom.
I understand that publicly Robert Saleh and the Jets have to stand behind Wilson at this point. But behind the scenes, Joe Douglas needs to force Saleh’s hand. He needs to bring in a QB that will offer Saleh a choice that he will ultimately make.
Without bringing in another QB, I would ask what is the point of this season? Is it to try and make the playoffs? Or is it to “see what you have” in Zach Wilson?
If you can’t see what you have in him at this point than your eyes are closed. If you think you can make the playoffs with Zach Wilson, you aren’t paying attention.
Frustrations continue to mount on sidelines for Jets during latest loss to Patriots
The frustrations are beginning to mount for the New York Jets and it seems to be getting worse. This is not a team that is okay with the way thing have gone the last two weeks. The Jets came into the season with high expectations and things have not gone well since Aaron Rodgers went […]
