Jets are watching one of their best players make a decision that will cost him thousands of dollars

Yesterday was important, today it’s personal.
When the Jets traded for star pass rusher Haason Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles, they knew he was unhappy with his current contract and wanted a new deal, but they must have at least thought he would have shown up.
Reddick, who hasn’t spoken to Jets head coach Robert Saleh since being traded from Philadelphia to New York, has not shown up to the Jets facility at all this off season skipping all of the Jets voluntary OTAs, a move that cost him $250,000 in a workout bonus. But it doesn’t end there.
The Jets held their mandatory media day on Monday and Reddick was the only Jets player not to attend. And with the first day of mandatory minicamp underway in Florham Park, NJ today, Reddick is still nowhere to be seen.
With Reddick blowing off minicamp, shortened from three days to two, he will incur more than $50,000 in fines. Combining that with the $250k he already lost by not showing up to OTAs, and Reddick means business with this hold out.
He's due to make $14.25 million in base pay in the final year of his three-year deal he signed with Philly. It's easy to see why he'd want a nice raise. He's fourth in sacks (50.5) over the past four seasons and has no guaranteed money left on the contract.
But Joe Douglas isn’t in the habit of extending players before he needs to, and I don’t see why it would start with a player who hasn’t even shown his face in the building as of yet.
While this type of behavior is common in the NFL, and for the record I am pro-player in most of these disputes in the NFL, this one is a bit of a head scratcher. Reddick is joining a new team because the old one sent him packing and you would think he would want to be a model citizen in his new environment.
Reddick should get all the money he can while he can, but in this instance, you are negotiating with a team that hasn’t even met you. He should be in the building and showing the team who he is and why he should be paid.
I don’t expect Joe Douglas to give in to Reddick’s demand, the Jets hold all the leverage as he is under contract and soon to be 30-years-old, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Joe makes a good faith gesture that would ease the ego of Reddick and get him in for training camp. I would imagine Joe could convert some his $14.25million to a signing bonus, thus giving him some guaranteed money.
For now, Reddick is absent from camp, and this could be a long drawn out hold out that could go well into preseason. Buckle up.
Robert Saleh has the worst explanation for why star player is not at Jets’ OTAs
When the Jets let Bryce Huff walk in free agency to join the Philadelphia Eagles for a three-year deal worth $51.1 million, the Jets were drawing a line in the sand for how much they were willing to spend. Just a few weeks later, the Jets and the Eagles were able to come to an […]
