Ben Roethlisberger plants his flag regarding who he believes should be the next starting quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers
Here is who Ben Roethlisberger wants to see under center in Pittsburgh if things go a certain way this offseason.
For as long as we await the signing or drafting of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ next starting quarterback, the rumors will swirl and the ideas among talking heads will be generated. But for many Steelers fans, the future is on the presently constructed roster.
It turns out that for two-time Super Bowl champion and Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger, he feels the same way.
Ben Roethlisberger wants the Steelers to build around Will Howard if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t return
“If [Aaron Rodgers] decides, ‘Hey, I’m done. I’m gonna do my thing,’ I would absolutely still not draft a guy in the first round. I would ride with Will Howard for a couple of years, give him a chance, keep building this team around him,” Roethlisberger told James Harrison and Joe Haden on the Deebo and Joe podcast via YouTube.
“I would go O-line first in the draft, get a guard, and I would just absolutely build this team around Will Howard right now. And if it doesn’t work, guess what? In two years, the draft is loaded with quarterbacks. Go get a guy in the first round because it didn’t work with Will. You’re probably going to be drafting higher.”
The one problem with Will Howard starting in 2026
I have no issue with the Steelers giving Howard the keys in 2026 should Rodgers not return. The problem is, are we sure that T.J. Watt, or Cam Heyward, or DK Metcalf would feel the same way about that?
See, no matter how flawed national media members may believe the line of thinking is, the Steelers think they can contend for a Super Bowl. You look at the veteran acquisitions they made during free agency and the new contract they gave to Heyward, and it’s obvious that the team believes it still has a window.
Throwing a 6th-round rookie into the fire with a roster that wants to compete rather than rebuild could be a disaster waiting to happen. Or, if Will Howard is good, it could be one of the best draft picks in recent Steelers memory. Only time will tell.
