Cameron Latu endured a difficult training camp and, at best, an up and down preseason. He won't have the chance to atone for either in the regular season.

As the 49ers trimmed to their roster to 53 players, tight end Latu was placed on injured reserve, ending the third-round rookie's campaign before it had a chance to begin.

That decision follows Latu suffering a meniscus injury that may require surgery.

Latu going on IR indicates he will likely will have the surgery and is a disappointing blow for a player who was hoping to turn things around after struggling with drops in camp.

His preseason debut saw Latu fumble on his only reception, while he was also flagged for holding on a kickoff return.

He bounced back in Week 2 with three catches for 46 yards and a touchdown.

However, this decision by the 49ers removes any hope of him silencing those who felt the former Alabama tight end was a reach with the 101st pick in his rookie year.

Latu's misfortune opened the door for seventh-round pick Brayden Willis, who made the initial 53-man roster as one of four tight ends. Behind starter George Kittle, Charlie Woerner and Ross Dwelley also earned spots on the team.
