The 49ers performed exceptionally in all three phases in their season-opening win over the Steelers on Sunday, leading one former rival to make a bold statement with most of Week 1 in the rearview mirror.
Former Cowboys coach Jason Garrett labeled the 49ers his 'best of Week 1' on NBC's Sunday Night Football broadcast. Explaining his reasoning, he gave them an even more impressive title.
"Last year we talked about how complete the Philadelphia Eagles were, this [the 49ers] is the most complete team in football," said Garrett.
"They can throw it, they can run it, they can throw it to different guys and this defense is something else. They can rush, they can stop the run. Great start for defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. I love the Niners."
It is only a one-game sample size, but it is an assessment that looks tough to dispute on the evidence of the 49ers' efforts in Pittsburgh, with their performance reflective of a roster with very few holes.
The 49ers produced a tremendously balanced offensive display, racking up 203 net passing yards and 188 net yards on the ground. On defense, they sacked Kenny Pickett five times, intercepted him twice and registered eight tackles for loss in limiting the Steelers to 3.9 yards per play.
Even the special teams delivered, with rookie kicker Jake Moody hitting all three field goals and Mitch Wishnowsky pinning all three of his punts inside the 10-yard line.
The 49ers have built up a lot of prior credit having reached at least the NFC Championship Game in three of the previous four seasons.
Should they continue to perform at this standard at the season progresses, there will be plenty more joining Garrett on what is already a pretty full San Francisco bandwagon.
