The 49ers will need to add another cornerback to the active roster after Kyle Shanahan confirmed Samuel Womack III will be placed on injured reserve.
Womack has missed the last two practices for the Week 2 game with the Rams because of an MCL injury. The 49ers do expect him back this season.
His injury creates a hole at the fifth cornerback spot, and the 49ers have three candidates on the practice squad who could fill it in Tre Swilling, Shemar Jean-Charles and Qwuantrezz Knight.
Jean-Charles offers inside-out versatility while Knight can also play both spots as well as safety. Knight figures to be the best candidate as a player who could provide upside on special teams.
The 49ers have rookie Darrell Luter Jr. on the PUP list with a knee injury. He is expected back around Week 5.
For Womack it is another setback in a short career that initially promised much when he won the starting nickel cornerback job as a fifth-round rookie last season. However, Womack was quickly benched for Deommodore Lenoir and has been largely limited to special teams since.
Womack is anticipated to miss between six to eight weeks.
49ers’ interior defensive line dominance an excellent sign for 2023 hopes
It quickly impressed in the season opener.
