Kyle Shanahan had a raft of injury updates a day on from the 49ers' preseason finale with the Chargers, the headliner a blow to rookie tight end Cameron Latu that may require surgery.

Third-round tight end Latu endured a difficult training camp defined by struggles with drops but bounced back in a big way in the second preseason game against the Broncos, in which he caught a touchdown pass as one of three receptions.

He had limited influence over Friday's exhibition game, however, and may have to wait some time to make his regular-season debut after Shanahan confirmed Latu suffered a meniscus injury that might require a procedure to correct.

Despite his disappointing camp, the 49ers will likely want to see if they can get something out of Latu this season, meaning he should still make the 53-man roster and then go injured reserve with a designation to return.

Another of the 49ers' third-round picks, kicker Jake Moody, will have a big part to play this season, but he could miss the season opener with a quad strain suffered prior to the preseason finale. That injury was compounded by Zane Gonzalez sustaining a calf injury in warmups, leaving the Niners facing the irritating possibility of having to add a third kicker to the roster.

Safety Tayler Hawkins, meanwhile, is set for surgery on a broken hand. A previous candidate for the practice squad, he will instead likely land on season-ending injured reserve. At the same position, All-Pro Talanoa Hufanga has been dealing with a Baker's cyst, which is a build-up of fluid behind the knee. There is no suggestion it will have any impact on his readiness for Week 1.

There was good news for veteran wide receiver Chris Conley, with his shoulder injury revealed to be an AC joint sprain. He is day to day and is a strong practice squad candidate.

Running back Jordan Mason is also day to day with a foot sprain. The 49ers will hope he shakes that off relatively quickly given Elijah Mitchell is also dealing with an adductor issue. Christian McCaffrey is the engine that drives the run game and much of the 49er offense, but San Francisco needs the depth options behind the focal point of their attack to be healthy to reduce some of the burden on him.
