In a Super Bowl featuring Patrick Mahomes, the only active player that seems to have a chance to rival Brady in the history books, against the Philadelphia Eagles, one of only two teams that have beat Brady in the biggest game, you would have thought that Brady would be armed to the teeth with ammo to use when calling the game.
Instead, it was flat, boring, and lifeless. For arguably the most cerebral quarterback in NFL history, none of it showed in the booth, when we all know he has the superchip in his brain to do it. This was clearly Brady's worst Super Bowl performance.
Brady appeared on Colin Cowherd's show last week, and he took a dive into his preparation, his film study, his understanding of everything that the defense was doing, and how that was his super power. He recalled being able to walk up to the line and instantly knowing that they were bringing pressure, or on other plays, knowing they were going to bail into cover-2. It's that ability and understanding of what defenses are going to do that led Brady to be the most successful quarterback in NFL history, because, as he described, it felt like he was playing with the answers to the test.
"What's the internet speed of me as a quarterback? fast as s***," he said.
Yeah, Brady, we know that to be true. So why don't we see it in the booth?
Everyone at home knew the Chiefs were getting blown out of the water right out of the gate, but whether it was Brady's fault or FOX's, we never heard him dive into why, or what the Eagles defense was doing that was making life so tough, or how he would respond as a quarterback if he knew his offensive line was overmatched.
Brady has all the answers to the test in his brain. Viewers would have been enthralled to listen to him give suggestions for what Mahomes needs to do differently, or how Andy Reid, one of the greatest and most innovative offensive minds in football, could have changed up the play calls. That's what Brady is getting paid hundreds of millions of dollars to do, not to simply describe what's happening on the field in front of him. Put that 4D brain to use, man.
