The Athletic thinks the Buffalo Bills have a player who could be in line for a second-year breakout.
Nick Baumgardner, an NFL writer for The Athletic, recently predicted which second-year players will break out in 2022 and he has Bills edge rusher Boogie Basham turning the corner this season.
The Bills don’t have to overload Basham, so they can continue to let him blossom and grow with a talented position group. All great stuff, because Basham’s potential as a 280-pound ball of explosion is large. His burst and ability to move in space at that size will continue to show up in Buffalo’s rotation, as was the case late last season and into the playoffs.
Basham hasn’t gotten there yet as a pass rusher — he still needs to find more refinement to his overall plan. But when it all clicks, Basham could be a long-term contributor.
Basham was selected by the Bills in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
The former Wake Forest standout played in eight games last season for the Bills and totaled 2.5 sacks and 18 tackles.
Basham is fortunate to be in a position where the Bills don’t need to count on him this season. He also has the benefit of learning from future Hall of Famer Von Miller this season. Miller’s wisdom could certainly help take Basham’s game to the next level.
Edge rushers typically take a couple of years to reach their full potential. Basham has the talent to be a superstar in the NFL. And he’s in a great situation to let that evolution happen naturally.
