The Chicago Bears could be losing a key member of their franchise.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Monday that the Tennessee Titans have requested an interview with Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham.
Two more for the #Titans GM opening: Sources say they've requested to interview Glenn Cook of the #Browns and Ian Cunningham of the #Bears, two rising young executives. They'll also speak with top in-house candidates Ryan Cowden and Monti Ossenfort.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 9, 2023
Cunningham is essright-handoles’ right hand man. And he’s an extremely important part of the Bears’ front office.
In fact, early last year, The Athletic pointed out that Cunningham could be a secret weapon for the Bears this upcoming offseason in free agency. An agent told The Athletic that players would sign with Chicago because of Cunningham.
THE BEARS’ HIRING OF POLES WASN’T QUESTIONED NEARLY AS MUCH AS THE TEAM’S PROCESS THAT LED TO HIM. THOSE WHO TALKED ABOUT IT ROLLED THEIR EYES ON THE BEARS’ NEED TO USE BILL POLIAN AS AN ADVISER, DESPITE POLIAN’S HALL OF FAME CREDENTIALS.
IT WAS OFFSET BY PRAISE FOR NEW ASSISTANT GM IAN CUNNINGHAM, THOUGH. HE MAY BE THE MOST POPULAR MEMBER OF THE NEW STAFF. LEAGUE SOURCES RAVED ABOUT WHAT HE CAN MEAN FOR POLES AND THE PERSONNEL DEPARTMENT.
“CUNNINGHAM WILL BRING GUYS IN,” ONE AGENT SAID. “THEY’LL SIGN BECAUSE OF HIM.”
“HE’S THE ONE,” A RIVAL FRONT-OFFICE EXECUTIVE SAID.
It sounds like Cunningham is going to be a general manager sooner rather than later.
And while I’m sure Poles and the rest of Chicago’s front office wants to see Cunningham progress in his career, I’m betting they hope he sticks around for one more season so he can help navigate what could be one of the most important offseasons in Bears franchise history.
