There aren’t many people more qualified to discuss tight end play than former Bears great Greg Olsen. On Tuesday, Olsen joined ESPN 1000’s Waddle and Silvy Show to give an honest breakdown of Cole Kmet’s 2022 season.
“I thought he had a really good year,” Olsen said. “Kinda showed he can be a red zone guy, he’s a big physical guy. I don’t know if he’s ever gonna run by anybody, but I think when you’re talking about the way they’re gonna have to build this offense with Justin (Fields) and play to his strengths, the tight end is at the center piece of that style of offense.”
After catching just two touchdowns in his first two season in Chicago, Kmet followed it up with a career-high seven touchdown grabs in 2022. He led the Bears in receptions (50), receiving yards (544), and receiving touchdowns (7).
“I think he showed that he’s a guy they can continue to build around and continue to develop. In the right system, with the right pieces around him, I think he’s shown that he can be a highly effective player,” Olsen noted.
Kmet proved to be an integral part of Chicago’s offense this season, establishing himself as Fields’ go-to guy. If Chicago’s front office can improve the team’s wide receivers, Kmet should flourish as defenses will be forced to key on other threats in the passing game.
