CINCINNATI – The Bengals had a very, very solid draft. It’s hard to come away with any drastic objections.
But for some reason, NFL.com’s Dan Hanzus dropped them a spot in the his post-draft power rankings on Monday.
Granted, it’s only one spot and it’s post-draft power rankings. There is still a long, long way to go when it comes to determining the best teams for 2022, but still, when you consider the Bengals were the only team in the top-5 that dropped out of their pre-draft ranking and the team that jumped them, it’s easy to see why it can be taken as disrespect.
For some reason, Hanzus has the Buccaneers -the team that took a punter in the fourth round and reached on multiple prospects- jumping the Bengals for the No. 3 spot. The Buccaneers were originally ranked fourth heading into the draft, but had an average draft, at best.
Hanzus’ final sentence describing the Bengals draft process makes his decision even more confusing:
The Bengals are running their team with sound and direct logic — they identify and attack deficiencies in an efficient matter. The 2022 draft was the latest example.
Maybe he simply felt like he needed to shake up the top-5, but that could’ve been achieved by dropping the Bucs out of the top-5 and replacing them with, let’s say, a Kansas City Chiefs team that absolutely nailed the draft.
Regardless, the Bengals and their fans know where they stand. It just looks like they’ll have to remind some people who they are in 2022.
