CBS Sports recently named an “under-the-radar” player from each AFC team that could be a star in 2022.
For the Cincinnati Bengals, CBS Sports went with kicker Evan McPherson.
Evan McPherson had a postseason for the ages in his rookie year, a massive contributor toward the Bengals reaching Super Bowl LVI. McPherson went 14 for 14 in the playoffs, the most field goals without a miss by any kicker in a single postseason in league history. He also was the first player in NFL history with four field goals made in multiple games in a single postseason.
Normally I’d question the inclusion of a kicker on any sort of list.
But McPherson isn’t an average kicker.
Not only is he pretty good, but he’s kind of already a household name among plugged-in NFL fans.
McPherson generated headlines earlier this year when he said “looks like we’re going to the AFC Championship” just moments before hitting a 52-year field goal to beat the Tennessee Titans in the divisional round of the playoffs.
The former Florida kicker was also the topic of headlines thanks to his decision to watch the Super Bowl halftime show instead of going to the locker room with the team. Some folks didn’t mind that the kicker stayed out during halftime, while others criticized McPherson for not going inside with his team.
Regardless of where you stand on the halftime debacle, there’s no doubt that McPherson is already one of the more well-known kickers in the NFL. And if CBS Sports is correct, he’ll be even more popular by the end of the 2022 season.
