The Florida Gators are set to kick off the Jon Sumrall era on Saturday when they take on the Florida Atlantic Owls.

It’s a big game for a number of reasons. They don’t just kick off the Sumrall era, but this game will also symbolize the official end of the Billy Napier era. It’s also the first game of the 2026 season, along with the home opener in The Swamp.

There are a lot of things to watch for. The offense is led by new quarterback Aaron Philo and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner. That element is huge for the Gators, as they haven’t been able to field an explosive offense since the 2020 season led by Kyle Trask and Kyle Pitts. Can they elevate this unit to what the Gators once had? Only time will tell, and the first game on Saturday will help us see whether or not they have it in them.
