It’s only Week 2 of the NFL season and the Dallas Cowboys are already missing a lot of starters. The game they have at hand is far from an easy matchup as the Los Angeles Chargers provide an offense that can keep up with Dak Prescott’s unit.

It’ll be a fun matchup, not only between the players but between the coaches. But it’ll be a tough one to bet on. We got off to a winning start in Week 1 here on Betting the Cowboys and might be forced to stick to a similar plan in Week 2.

The odds

  • Spread: Los Angeles Chargers -3 (-110)
  • Moneyline: Dallas Cowboys +145
  • Total: 54.5

Public betting: Cowboys are live dogs

The Dallas Cowboys are getting the public love this week. It’s easy to see why, being America’s Team and coming off a surprising performance at Tampa Bay. According to The Action Network, 55% of the bets are with the Cowboys.

It’s not a major lean on Dallas, but last week they were on the other side of the coin with 57% of the best against them. The Cowboys ended up covering the +9.5 spread comfortably.

Trends

  • Cowboys are 5-1 against the spread in their last 6 games as an underdog.
  • Over is 5.0 in the Cowboys’ last 5 games as an underdog.
  • Overall, the over has cashed in 6 of the Cowboys’ last 8 games.
  • Chargers have covered the spread in their last five.

The pick: Once again, expect Cowboys to score

Last week, we bet on the Cowboys to hit the over on their team total, which was low thanks to their underdog status. They hit 29 points while the number was set at 20.5 and that’s despite leaving plenty of points on the field.

I’m a bit concerned about the pace of this game as they get ready to face Brandon Staley’s defense, but the truth is I believe the Chargers’ defense will be overpowered on Sunday. The focus will be on Joey Bosa having the clear edge over RT Terrence Steele, but player-by-player the Cowboys’ offense is much better in terms of talent.

I expect this to be a shootout kind of game in which I can’t trust the defense enough to go with the betting spread. Instead, in a similar play to last week’s, we’ll hit the team total over at just a tad below four touchdowns.

The bet: Cowboys team total OVER 26.5 (-110)

Season bets: 1-0
