It’s the first NFC East matchup for the Dallas Cowboys in 2021. Despite it being a Week 3 game, it feels like a game with massive implications for the division. As things stand right now, the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles apparently are way better than the bottom two teams in the division.

The Cowboys’ offense is clearly the superior unit heading into tonight’s matchup, but is the Eagles’ defense underrated?

The odds

Spread: Dallas Cowboys -3.5 (-105)

Moneyline: Philadelphia Eagles +160, Dallas Cowboys -190

Total: 51.5

Public betting: Sharp money in disagreement with fans

The public is heavy on the Cowboys. 65% of the bets are on the home favorite for Monday Night Football, per The Action Network. Far from a surprise, considering it’s a primetime game and it’s the Dallas Cowboys.

However, it’s interesting to see that although the bets are split 35% Eagles and 65% Cowboys, the percentage of the money is significantly different. 46% of the money is on Philadelphia while 54% is on the Cowboys.

Perhaps the sharps like the points better than the average fan? When the “% of bets” is significantly different than the “% of the money,” it’s usually a sign of sharp money. Keep in mind, this is not always the case.

Trends:

  • Eagles are 1-6 against the spread in their last 7 road games.
  • Under is 9-3 in Eagles’ last 12 games.
  • The home team is 5-0 against the spread in the last 5 meetings.

The pick: Ignoring the awkward “half-point” for Dallas Cowboys

I’m not a fan of playing lines like “-3.5”. It always feels like that half-point will end up ruining things. However, the Dallas Cowboys’ explosive offense provides confidence. The Philadelphia Eagles might be underrated, but I don’t count on their offense keeping things close even against a banged-up Dallas defense.

The Cowboys improved on their red-zone efficiency last week and I expect them to build on that with Amari Cooper starting at WR despite dealing with an injury. The Eagles’ defense is well-coached, but the Cowboys’ skill-position players should hold an edge.

I also considered the Under as the bet to make here, as the Eagles’ defense will likely force the Cowboys to be patient and put together long drives. But I’m laying the points in this game instead.

The bet: Dallas Cowboys -3.5 (-105)

Season bets: 1-1
