The Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders are not set to face each other until Week 4. However, the Commanders (who are also 1-1 at the moment) were able to pull off an early win versus their division rivals.
The recently renamed franchise claimed DT John Ridgeway from waivers on Monday, a 2022 draft pick for the Cowboys.
After sustaining several injuries, the Cowboys made a flurry of roster moves last week that resulted in Ridgeway being waived. The front office – according to multiple reports – was hoping to re-sign the former fifth-round pick to the practice squad if he cleared waivers.
Ridgeway was expected to battle Quinton Bohanna for the starting nose tackle job, but Big Bo clearly pulled away with the lead in training camp. Even still, the Cowboys prioritized keeping Ridgeway on the 53-man roster, probably afraid to lose the Arkansas product to the waiver wire.
The Cowboys even cut veteran Carlos Watkins following the preseason, a veteran who was a key rotational player for Dallas in 2021 at the one-technique spot.
As is usually the case with these players, expect the Cowboys to keep a close eye on John Ridgeway over the following year. They clearly like the defensive tackle and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him rejoin the team further down the road.
