The Denver Broncos have a stacked defense already. They have great players at nearly every position on that side of the ball. The only thing they are missing is a middle linebacker.

As it just so happens, there is a really good one on the market, right now.

On Tuesday, Chicago Bears star linebacker Roquan Smith requested a trade from the team. This is going to lead most teams to try to get him but most of them either don’t need him or won’t have the assets.

The Broncos fit the criteria.

Smith would be a great fit next to Josey Jewell. Denver should be able to get him for a decent price, too. They also have enough cap space for Smith, but will definitely need to make some adjustments for the extension he is wanting. Oh, and let’s not forget that Denver is an AFC team, so the Bears should be willing to deal him to Denver.

The Broncos have seen encouraging signs from both Jewell and Jonas Griffith during camp so far, but it’s impossible to deny Smith would be an upgrade over both. Especially when considering the latter was a practice squad player before coming to the Broncos in 2021.

Smith would immediately come in and not only add star power, but his presence would keep the pressure off Griffith and keep him as a depth player, which is where he’s most effective, currently. The Broncos know how valuable linebacker depth is after the injuries they suffered at the position, last year.

Head coach Nathaniel Hackett knows Smith very wel,l too. As an offensive coach in Green Bay, he coached against him twice a year from 2019-2021.

This trade needs to happen for the Broncos’ sake. It would only help them in this tight window of getting a Super Bowl. Their defense would easily become the best in the division, if not the AFC.

The Broncos sent the message to the NFL that they’re all-in when they decided to trade for Russell Wilson earlier in the year. Trading for Smith not only reinforces that message, but it places the Broncos even closer to contender status.
