The Denver Broncos have some very notable candidates for their open head coach position right now.
Sean Payton and John Harbaugh headline that group.
As of right now, Harbaugh is still the head coach at the University of Michigan. The Wolverines are fresh off a College Football Playoff appearance.
Harbaugh, alongside Michigan, released a statement following their loss to TCU.
He said that he expects to return to Michigan, but his phrasing did not sound too sure of the probability of that occurring. Now, there are more details surfacing about his future with Michigan.
The school is not offering him a contract extension yet, and that may give the Denver Broncos a better chance to strike.
Pete Thamel says Michigan is unlikely to issue Jim Harbaugh a new contract until there's some clarity in the current NCAA case.— Trevor Woods (@WoodsFootball) January 12, 2023
What a mistake. Loyalty matters.
1. Warde Manuel should have Harbaugh's back 100% vs. the NCAA.
2. Make Harbaugh the highest paid Big Ten coach.
His situation at Michigan seems a bit up in the air.
Accordingly, the Broncos may get an upper hand to go after him. Harbaugh is getting interviews for multiple NFL jobs.
He and Payton are the two most sought after candidates as of right now.
They both have a plethora of NFL experience and success. They each bring a unique skillset to every job that they get a chance to grab during this cycle.
If Michigan continues to play it slow with Harbaugh, he may be more interested in taking an NFL job sooner rather than later.
