The Denver Broncos are conducting their thorough search for a new head coach.

After firing Nathaniel Hackett after just one season, there is certainly plenty of pressure on the front office. They need to nail this hire, and they have the money/resources to do exactly that.

Accordingly, the Broncos are going big-fish hunting for their new HC – it seems. Former New Orleans Saints HC Sean Payton is one of the main candidates for the job.

There’s mutual interest between both parties, and Denver knows the Saints’ price to acquire Payton from them.

A situation in the AFC West may have just boosted the Broncos’ chances to grab Payton as well, though.

The Los Angeles Chargers fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. Lombardi worked under Payton for years in New Orleans, and the two are close. If the Broncos are willing to let Payton assemble his staff as expected, bringing Lombardi in with him would make plenty of sense.

Payton would be able to bring some familiarity with him to Denver.

Now, that being said, Lombardi’s time as the OC for the Chargers was not smooth. Many consider his play-calling and scheme to be a bit outdated, and that is probably true.

If Payton wanted to bring him with him to his new destination. that team should probably hope that it is as a QBs coach for Lombardi. He was successful in that role during his time with the Saints.

Additionally, the Chargers are keeping Brandon Staley as their head coach.

There was belief that Payton would enjoy the opportunity to go to LA, but that job will not be open during this cycle.

That helps the Broncos as of right now as well if they decide that he is their guy.

Regardless, the Chargers’ decisions today could increase the chances that Payton lands with the Broncos in the next couple of weeks.
