The Green Bay Packers made a puzzling move this offseason according to CBS Sports.

Jordan Dajani, an NFL writer for CBS Sports, pointed out the most questionable move of the offseason by each NFC team and he listed the Davante Adams trade for the Packers.

Adams was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders for draft picks back in March.

From CBS Sports:

This one was tough, because it seemed like Adams had a foot out the door as soon as the Packers were eliminated in the postseason. He even confirmed recently that the Packers were willing to offer him more money to stay, which obviously they should have. Adams also talked about wanting to be on the west coast and raise his family, which I get, but I feel like this is a situation the Packers would have addressed differently if they could do it again.

The Packers should have gotten that extension done — maybe even before the 2021 season — and then enjoyed watching the market absolutely explode this offseason. Obviously they couldn’t have predicted that, but everyone who watches football understands that Adams is one of the best players in the league. It will be fascinating to see how his absence affects the offense as a whole.

I think Dajani is right and wrong with his analysis.

He’s right that Green Bay could’ve worked out an extension before last season and possibly avoided all of this (though that wouldn’t have stopped Adams from demanding a trade this offseason if he so desired).

At the same time, he’s incorrect that the Packers could’ve salvaged the situation this offseason. Green Bay offered Adams more money than Las Vegas — this didn’t come down to money.

Adams has already made it clear that he wanted to be on the west coast and he wanted to play with Derek Carr, his close friend from college. The Pro-Bowl wide receiver also mentioned recently that the uncertainty surrounding Aaron Rodgers’ future impacted his decision as well.

The Adams trade was certainly puzzling when it first happened. But now that we’ve had some time to digest it, I think it’s fairly clear that Green Bay had no choice but to send Adams to Las Vegas.
