CBS Sports thinks there’s an “under-the-radar” play on the Green Bay Packers‘ roster that could turn into a star in 2022.

Patrik Walker, an NFL writer for CBS Sports, recently pointed out Packers cornerback Darnell Savage as a player who could shine this upcoming season.

From CBS Sports:

Sure, it’s difficult to view a former first-round pick at any position as someone flying under the radar, but considering Savage was given that nod in 2019, and we’re now entering 2022, it’s safe to say the coming circumstances for Savage position him well for a monster season. He has proven himself a capable starter, but not necessarily a star player, but the latter could change with potential contract talks ahead — as his rookie deal begins to near its conclusion. It feels like a do-or-die moment for Savage, and players usually find an extra gear (or several) when that’s the case.

ions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is tackled by Packers free safety Darnell Savage during the first half on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022, at Ford Field.

The Packers drafted Savage in the first round (No. 21 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Savage has been solid so far for Green Bay, though unspectacular. He’s been good enough that the Packers picked up his fifth-year option, meaning he’ll be under contract in Green Bay through the 2023 season.

I’m sure Savage will be motivated to perform at a high level after watching cornerback Jaire Alexander, the Packers’ first-round pick in 2018, receive a lucrative extension earlier this offseason.

Green Bay rewards homegrown players who produce. If Savage has a breakout 2022 season and becomes a star like CBS Sports is predicting, he could easily be the next Packers player who receives an extension.
