Packers beat writer says free agent addition will be key piece in 2022

While most eyes are on the Green Bay Packers‘ additions through the draft and their own re-signees, there’s one outside free agent addition that is likely to be a key piece on the 2022 roster.

Keisean Nixon was signed by the Packers back in March after he spent all three years of his career with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. Nixon only has 235 defensive snaps to his name, but that’s not where he’ll make his hay with the Packers.

That’s on special teams under Rich Bisaccia, who coached Nixon while the two of them were with the Raiders.

Nixon was a key special teamer and according to Packers.com beat writer Wes Hodkiewicz, he’s expected to bring his special teams savvy over to the Packers.

Below is an excerpt from a recent mailbox column Hodkiewicz published:

Nixon is a key piece. He not only has played a lot on special teams but also has three years of experience playing for Rich Bisaccia and Byron Storer. We already saw Nixon being a coach on the field earlier this past spring.

Typically, people aren’t going to go crazy over a special teams player. And that’s through no fault of anyone’s, really.

But after the atrocity that was the Packers special teams last year -especially in the playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers- Nixon should be welcomed with plenty of open arms in 2022.

The Packers must improve on special teams this year, there’s no other way around it. That’s why they brought in Nixon and Bisaccia, among others.

And, Nixon could pick up some snaps in the Packers dime packages and he can play outside, according to Hodkiewicz.

It’s never guaranteed a player will pick up where they left off when going to a new team, but everything is set up for Nixon to surprise a lot of people, as well as help hold down the fort in 2022.
