The Green Bay Packers are expecting big things out of Sammy Watkins in 2022.

But it looks like they’re going to have to wait a little bit before he can truly shows what he has to offer.

That’s because the Packers placed Watkins on the Active/Non-football injury list Tuesday. Meaning, he can’t practice until he’s removed from the list.

NFL Network‘s Tom Pelissero was the first to report the news.

It’s not clear as to what kind of injury Watkins is dealing with, but it’s a bit of a setback considering the recent comments from both head coach Matt LaFleur and quarterback Aaron Rodgers that reflect their expectations for Watkins in 2022.

“There’s definitely going to be opportunities for him to make plays in this offense,” said Rodgers. “I think he has everything right in front of him to have as productive a year as he wants to.”

And as mentioned, LaFleur backed up his quarterback soon after.

“Obviously we have history going back to L.A. together,” LaFleur told reporters back in June. “So that definitely gives you a pretty good idea of what he’s capable of doing. I don’t think his game has fallen off, at all, since we were together in 2017. A little bit of it has been a lack of opportunity.

“He’s a guy that’s out there working hard and he’s going to be a big part of our offense.”

Now the hope is Watkins can get back on the field as soon as possible. Per ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, it sounds like Watkins’ return will indeed be sooner rather than later.

But, obviously, this will be something to keep an eye on moving forward.

In the meantime, the Packers have Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, Amari Rodgers, Romeo Doubs, Samori Toure, and others who will compete for playing time with and reps from Aaron Rodgers.

Christian Watson, the Packers’ first pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, is on the Active/PUP list.
