GREEN BAY – If it hasn’t already, 2022 will eventually be dubbed as the Year of the Packers receivers room.
No matter what happens, good or bad, people will continue to place the receiving corps under a microscope. And they’ll continue to make their assessments, accordingly.
So it shouldn’t be any surprise that one of the Packers receivers, veteran Sammy Watkins, was listed by NFL.com‘s Jeffri Chadiha as one of the most intriguing players to come out of this past week’s minicamps.
Chadia wrote the following regarding Watkins:
“This will be the third team Watkins has played on in the last three seasons, and he once again is being tasked with a potentially influential role. He was the man who did all the dirty work in complementing Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce in Kansas City.
Last season, he was the veteran who was supposed to give Lamar Jackson a steady target in the Baltimore Ravens’ offense. Now, he’s the most accomplished wide receiver on a team that just traded away the best player in the league at that position, Davante Adams, to the Las Vegas Raiders. The Packers sorely need Watkins to be a difference-maker in a receiver room that includes Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and rookie Christian Watson.
… He hasn’t played a full season since his rookie year in 2014….
This is a team that has reached the NFC Championship Game in two of the last three years, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers is hungry for another shot at the Super Bowl.”
Watkins will certainly get his share of opportunities in the Packers passing game
Matt LaFleur even said it himself earlier in the week.
“I don’t think his game has fallen off, at all, since we were together in 2017,” said LaFleur. “A little bit of it has been a lack of opportunity
“He’s a guy that’s out there working hard and he’s going to be a big part of our offense.”
Rodgers is fully aware of the role Watkins can play in the Packers offense, as well.
“There’s definitely going to be opportunities for him to make plays in this offense,” said Rodgers. “I think he has everything right in front of him to have as productive a year as he wants to.”
While he hasn’t been the most reliable in regard to his health and availability, Watkins is easily the most accomplished receiver currently on the roster. Chadhia’s right: the Packers are going to need him to step it up in a big way in 2022.
But that also doesn’t mean the other guys can take it easy. The Packers are going to need Lazard, Watson, Doubs, etc. to hold their own, as well.
Watkins is certainly an intriguing player. But with how things have shaped up for the Packers receivers thus far and with how things will likely play out, it’s a safe bet to say another Packers receiver will have this title, eventually.
