When thinking back over the last few years, the Chiefs have been known to have a horrible defense. Even at the start of this season, Kansas City had issues on that side of the ball, issues we all expected. Now, the Chiefs are catching everyone by surprise with the stellar play of their defense.

You can bring up the Chiefs schedule, and how weak their opponents have been. However, if we are being honest, the defenses of the Chiefs past would have still struggled against teams like that.

The Kansas City Chiefs are back, and it starts with their defense. There were a few players on Sunday who were the reason why this defense shut down the Raiders.

Chiefs defense anchored by three great performers

Mike Hughes, CB:

The newly added cornerback made a huge impact against the Las Vegas Raiders, right from the first snap. Thanks to Mike Hughes, the Chiefs offense didn’t even get to get on the field until two defensive possessions.

Mike Hughes had a fumble recovery for a touchdown, along with nine tackles. He was also a huge reason for a few of the other turnovers the Chiefs created.

Tyrann Mathieu, SS:

If we are being honest, Tyrann Mathieu can be on this list just about every week. This week was no different, as the honey badger created chaos all game. With one fumble recovery, one pass deflection, and one interception, Tyrann Mathieu was everywhere against the Raiders.

Alex Okafor, DE:

The Kansas City Chiefs were able to create consistent pressure on Raiders quarterback Derek Carr all game. Whether it was Frank Clark or Chris Jones, the defense was playing great. However, it was a name we don’t hear as often that made a huge impact. Alex Okafor was able to get to Derek Carr a few times, creating relentless pressure. He hit Carr twice and brought him down 1.5 times
